New Year’s Eve 2008

Duke played Loyola at 4:00 and continued the nation-wide record of non-conference home wins (65 games) with a 92-51 win.  Nolan Smith injured his knee early in the game, which is some cause for concern, but from what I’ve read afterwards it was just bruised and it shouldn’t be a big deal. Gerald Henderson continued to do well, and Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer (who, with Smith out, played point when Greg Paulus was on the bench) both scored in double figures.  So did Brian Zoubek, for that matter.  The second strong didn’t look too great, but at least they got some good in-game time.  I really hope Paulus’ arm will hurry up and heal so he can get his …

The Office at the Warkentiens’

Lately I’ve been getting up when Amanda’s alarm goes off to let the dogs out and feed them.  Amanda likes to sit in bed for a while after it goes off, whereas about 90% of the time (probably more) when the alarm goes off I get up right away.  The problem is that Harvey now gets so excited when the alarm goes off (I guess because it means he gets to go outside and then comes the food!) that if you sit in bed he’ll jump all over you and paw at you and lick you anyway, so there’s no real point in sitting in bed because you’re not going to get any rest. Anyway, once the dogs are fed …

Epic Catan Win

Amanda and I went to Port City Community Church this morning, where we finished off a series called Perfect on Paper, which dealt with how life is so often seen as a resume, but how the focus should be more on serving God through our families.  Basically. I felt like having pancakes for breakfast this morning so Amanda and I stopped at Lowe’s Food where I ran in to get eggs, orange juice and pancake mix.  We got this kind that comes in a bottle, so you just add water and pour it out.  It worked out pretty well, although I probably should have kept them on the skillet a little longer. We didn’t do a whole lot after that.  …

Michael Mercer’s Washer and Dryer

Amanda and I slept in until about 10:00 today, which was a nice little change.  My plan was to get up and mow the yard, but it was drizzling out, which is how it stayed pretty much all day today.  On the subject of needing to mow the lawn, the good thing, I noticed today, about having pine trees that drop pine needles all over the place is they make the grass not look so tall. Amanda and I went to Atlanta Bread for breakfast then came home and picked up a bit, since her parents, Phil and Karen Mercer, were coming by.  A friend of Karen’s sold them a washer which they were bringing down here for Michael.  I …

Terrible Wife

I woke up in the office last night with the TV and the light on and I decided to head upstairs to get in bed.  As I walked down the hall I realized I’d left the living room light on as well, and as I turned the corner to walk towards the stairs I realized that not only was the front door open, but the storm door was being held wide open as well. I was immediately stricken with a pang of fear- I’d left the front door open with the light on and someone had come into the house and probably taken who knows what.  My next thought was that the dogs, Bruce and Harvey, might have gotten out …
